CHAPTER NINETEEN

Lilah jumped into the hole.

Her magnetic boots attached to the floor at once and her HUD told her what Min had already announced to the rest of them: the air was toxic and escaping out the hole fast. The Iso-pros, depending on how well they were programmed, would know there was a hull breach and might be dispatched to seal it. Lilah wasn’t sure what might happen as no one had tried this strategy before, but she wasn’t willing to leave her fate up to Davees and the Union. Despite its outward appearance, inside this was still a Solar Union ship. Only the exterior was designed to look like a Dvorak vessel. Sure it had been modified so that it wasn’t obvious but given the standard deck layout as well as the materials with which it was constructed, all a courtesy of Lilah’s HUD, it was easy to tell. Not to mention her research backed it up. And since Coss had taken it upon himself to leave Lilah behind, there was only one course of action left open to her. She had to get to the real engine room, and not the one they’d set up for her to find.

Because she hadn’t found any evidence anyone else had ever tried something like this, she stowed the high-powered thermal arc and pulled her T-416 out instead. She still had the backup “explosives” on her belt—except they were little more than signal generators that would transmit to the people running the exercise when they went off. Everyone in the squad had a set in case any one of them were incapacitated, but Lilah wasn’t planning on using them. They’d be useless where she was headed.

Although dark, the hall was outlined in her vision in a combination of night-vision and infrared which lit the corridor up as if it were daylight. Her HUD also built a 3-D representation of what was in front of her, including any adjacent corridors it might have detected. The Solar Union had done a good job of replicating the outside of the Dvorak ship, but not the inside. Inside it was just as bland as the inside of Tekomi Station. Her HUD flashed red to let her know she was headed the wrong way—opposite of the ship’s fake core which was their target. She considered turning it off, but then she wouldn’t be able to see a thing. Unfortunately, it was a necessity in a ship with no windows.

Lilah kept her weapon out in front of her but moved quickly down the corridor, the opposite way she knew Coss and the others had gone. She wouldn’t have a lot of time if she wanted to pull this off, which meant there couldn’t be any distractions. If Maroon or Blue got in her way, she’d be screwed. But they should be on other sides of the ship, and hopefully they were having more trouble with the hull than Purple had. It hadn’t been until Coss had told her to stay at the entrance that Lilah had made her decision.
